The best mascara for your holiday looks

December 13, 2017

Mascara has long since been a staple in the beauty routine of many women worldwide. And it’s no wonder, with women in the UK spending an average of £9,525 in their lifetime on makeup, according to the BBC. But with all the claims of thicker, fuller lashes, do any formulas actually deliver on those promises?

When it comes time to look for a great mascara to add to your routine, it’s important to do your research. The team at recently released a guide to finding a mascara to fit your beauty routine, and they determined a few key factors to consider. To start the search, you’ll want to determine what you’re looking for in a mascara: longer lashes or more volume? This will help steer you toward which formula and brush style to look for.

Each mascara has a great name and claims to lengthen lashes and create the perfect look. The truth is, all mascaras have pigment which darkens lashes and a polymer that coats them, a preservative to keep them from going bad, and a thickener.
  • For thicker, curlier lashes, look for a for a formula that has a resin, like wax. This will lift and bend lashes for a thicker look.
  • For longer lashes, look for a mascara that uses nylon fibers as an extension of your regular lashes.
It’s also important to talk about waterproof formulas. There are many options on the market that advertise as a waterproof mascara, but this isn’t necessarily a great thing for all lashes. Waterproof mascara is oil-based, which means that it will stay in place through sweat and tears. However, this makes it more susceptible to smudging, especially when the mascara encounters oily surfaces like your skin or other makeup. Waterproof mascara also has been known to damage eyelashes and can make them fall out, so keep your use to a minimum. If waterproof is essential to your daily routine, consider using a primer underneath it or even applying a coat of regular mascara to help protect your lashes from damage.

The structure of a mascara applicator brush is one important aspect of how it will perform. As with the formula, the type of brush that’s best depends on your end result.
  • For thicker lashes, opt for a mascara that offers a thick, full brush to add volume
  • For longer lashes, a smaller brush will be able to address your individual hairs to help add length

Now that you’ve got a good idea of which type of formula to go for, the other important aspect of a great mascara is the proper application. Follow these five application tips for the most successful look:
  1. Apply two layers, but don’t let the first one dry. Oftentimes beauty mavens will double up on their layers of mascara for a thicker look. Don’t make the mistake of letting the first layer dry, or else you’ll end up with flaky lashes.
  2. Mascara first, foundation second. By putting dark eye makeup on before applying your foundation, you reduce the risk of mascara smudges. You can also place a spoon behind your lashes to keep the pigment from getting on your eyelids.
  3. Start from the bottom, then wiggle the brush. Using this technique will ensure full coverage while reducing clumps.
  4. Toss the tube after 6 months. Even if you still have some product left, mascara has a 6-month lifespan and should be replaced to ensure proper function.
  5. Sharing isn’t caring. Our eyes are an opening to our bodies, which makes them susceptible to bacteria. Don’t share mascara, even with friends and family, as makeup is a breeding ground for pathogens, according to sources like the NIH.

So what really is the best?
The overall best mascara formula found was Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! This brush has beautiful bristles made of desert cactus, is large enough to provide volume, but is also thin enough to separate and define individual lashes. It also features a spiky tip for extra length, and you’ll find that the bristles latch onto hair from root to tip for a smooth lift. The result is glossy, silky, natural-looking plump lashes without clumping or smudging.
